Do You Have a Plumbing Leak?

When we think of plumbing leaks, we usually think of water gushing from a pipe or a drain in our basements as we frantically try to plug it. However, unlike TV shows or movies, plumbing leaks don’t always occur out in the open for everyone to see. Sometimes your plumbing system will leak for hours, days, weeks, or even months without you knowing about it unless you’re paying attention.

If you’re asking yourself, “well, what should I be paying attention to?” Then you’re starting to ask the right questions. We’re going to go over a few things about plumbing in Sherman, TX that can describe when you’re dealing with a leak that you might otherwise not have noticed. Hopefully, with our help, you know exactly when to call a plumber and have a leak dealt with before it becomes a worse problem.

Detecting a Leak

If you follow our advice and you still are unsure that you have a leak, you can always call our plumbing team for leak detection. Detecting a leak isn’t always easy and can be extremely difficult with pinhole leaks and other issues. Though, before you do—make sure you check for signs.

  • Mold. Mold grows in two types of locations, dark and damp. Unfortunately, that’s exactly where your plumbing is located, usually somewhere dark and damp with the help of a leak. If you detect mold in any part of your home, call a plumber and ask them to check the plumbing that might correspond to that location. You might have located a leak that needs to be fixed.
  • Soft Areas. Your home is likely made of wood, and when wood gets wet, it can rot and become soft. Your whole home won’t rot at once, which means as a leak progresses, the closest part to the leak will turn soft and rot. If you notice any soft spots in your home, be sure to call a plumber to have them check for a leak.
  • Odors. While you might not see any mold or mildew, you might be able to smell it somewhere in your home. Foul odors are not something you should put up with, and they can usually be a good sign that there’s a plumbing leak somewhere in your home.
  • The Sound of a Leak. Leaks that are larger than a pinhole often make a noise. Whether it’s dripping or full-on running water noises, you should keep your ears peeled for any sounds that don’t seem right. They could help you locate a leak in your plumbing.

Use Your Five Senses

Regardless of whether you’re smelling, touching, or seeing something that doesn’t feel right—your five senses are the best tool you have for locating and noticing a plumbing leak. Our professionals can only help you once you call them for service, and the faster you notice a leak like this, the less damage it’s likely to cause. Take it from the pros, a vigilant homeowner is the first and most important line of defense against plumbing leaks.
