When To Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner

If your air conditioner has been running questionably or giving you cause for concern over recent years, you may be torn between repairing it or replacing it. Sometimes, it’s hard to know which choice is the right one. The good news is, our team can help you make that decision with our expertise.

Just give us a call for air conditioning repair in Plano, TX. Then we can offer an in-home assessment of your air conditioner, highlight any issues that we identify, and help you weigh the pros and cons of repair versus replacement. Keep reading to learn more about some of the indications that you may want to replace your air conditioner instead of repairing it.

When to Repair Your AC

If you have a problem with your air conditioner within the first 10 years, it’s a good idea to repair it versus replacing it. During this timeframe, your AC still has some life left in it. If the manufacturer’s warranty is still active, there’s a chance that it’ll cover some of the parts and labor, depending on what the problem is.

You also want to take cost into consideration. Repairs make sense if they are fairly inexpensive. Our technicians can tell you whether or not it’s worthwhile to make a repair based on the condition of the rest of your system.

Many times, problems are isolated to one specific component or area of the AC while the rest of the unit is in great condition. Fixing a problem early is a great way to prevent the damage from escalating.

When to Replace Your AC

If your air conditioner is older than 10 years, you may want to consider replacing it instead of repairing it. This is especially true the older your air conditioner gets. There are some times that repairs can get you through another cooling season so that you can plan ahead for a new AC purchase the following year or two. If we can confidently make repairs that will last, we will. We can also give you an idea of how much a new air conditioner will cost so that you can begin planning ahead for a replacement.

But if repair bills start to get into the thousands of dollars, that’s a red flag that something major is wrong with your air conditioner. Even if we make a very expensive repair, there’s a good chance that the rest of your air conditioner is wearing down and not in great shape. We don’t want to make a very expensive repair that won’t be worth it if you still have to replace your air conditioner in the next few years.

Sometimes it does make more sense to put that money toward a new air conditioner, that you know will last your family for 15 years or more to come. Plus, older ACs are naturally less energy efficient. A new unit can save you a lot of money on your monthly energy bills. And when you invest in a new air conditioner and take excellent care of it from day one, it can last you even longer than the average lifespan.
