What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis systems don’t work quite like a standard media filter that traps particles so that they cannot keep moving through the plumbing system. Instead of using a fine mesh or carbon filters, as you might filter, reverse osmosis is a scientific process that involves a very, very thin semi–permeable membrane. This membrane allows mainly just pure water to get through, and other impurities are left behind and flushed away. That means you don’t have to worry so much about maintenance and you won’t need to bother with filter replacement. It consumes no energy and improves the state of your water in many ways.

What Types of Contaminants Can Reverse Osmosis Get Rid of?

A whole–house reverse osmosis system can get rid of the vast majority of contaminants that could otherwise move into your water supply. Impurities like salt and some minerals are stopped by the semi–permeable membrane. In addition, it can get rid of dangerous substances like nitrates, lead, arsenic, and some bacteria. It could also rid your water supply of any impurities that are added by the municipal supply in an attempt to clean up your water, like chlorine and fluoride. These are added by the city with good intentions, but some homeowners would rather have water that is pure and clean than water that contains any chemicals in it.
